I started with one queen
and a spare bedroom.
My name is Margaret Calloway. I'm a retired schoolteacher, and for the last fifteen years, my house has been full of cats and the people who love them. I breed British Shorthairs and Scottish Folds — two breeds that have the same gentle temperament, the same round faces, and the same habit of watching you from the kitchen counter like a small, judgmental loaf.
Every kitten is born in my bedroom and stays there until they're old enough to explore the rest of the house. They hear NPR in the mornings. They watch me cook. By the time they leave, they know what a dishwasher sounds like and why the vacuum isn't worth panicking over.
I keep litters small — never more than two queens at a time — because I believe every kitten deserves to be held every day by someone who knows their name.

Mochi steals socks and has no remorse. She carries them to her food bowl, arranges them neatly, and sits beside them like a dragon guarding treasure. She loves being held on her back like a baby and purrs so loudly it sounds like a small engine.

Clementine has decided that the crook of your elbow is hers by birthright. She gets there before you've finished sitting down. She is calm in new rooms, unbothered by strangers, and has never once startled at a loud noise — she just blinks slowly and goes back to sleep.

Fig is the quiet one. He watches before he acts, sits back while the others race, and then does exactly what he was going to do all along. He has learned to open the cabinet where I keep the treat bag. He is watching me write this right now.

Petal chirps instead of meows — a little trill that sounds like a question. She asks it constantly: at the window, at the food bowl, at your face at 6am. She has been reserved by a family in Eugene who are already, I am told, completely besotted.
